Basics in dog training

Bringing a new, cute, little puppy home can be an exciting and emotional experience. However the experience can go down quickly if appropriate dog training is not given or if the training process does not go as smoothly as you would like. This article will offer some basic dog training tips, so that you and your family can enjoy your new pet during and after the training process. It will discuss ways to stop dog barking, getting your dog to follow commands and dog potty training basics. This article will also help you decide whether or not your situation requires expert advice and training.

What are the Basics of Dog Training?

There are a few basic dos and don'ts involved in dog training. Before you begin training your dog or puppy there are a few simple, but important, basic dog training concepts to remember. For optimal results the following tips need to be followed when you begin.
Be Consistent
One the most important and effective concepts that should be followed in every dog training method is consistency. Training is much more effective and efficient when you and your family respond in the same manner each and every time when you are training your dog. For instance, if you want your dog to stay off the bed, never allow him or her on the bed. A dog can't understand that it's okay to play on the bed at a particular time and not always. You will be able to implement successful training if you're consistent.
Good Timing
In order to successfully train your new dog or puppy, you need to provide feedback in a timely manner. If your new puppy is chewing on your slippers you need to immediately correct the behavior and redirect you dog. If he has already moved onto to something else when you discover the slipper it is too late to punish the behavior. Likewise if you give a command and your puppy or dog obeys it's very important to reward the dog immediately so that he or she associates the reward with obeying of the command. Your dog or puppy will associate the punishment or reward with the behavior they were doing when the reward or punishment was administered.
Offer Praise
Similar to children, dogs react positively when praised. No doubt they become positively reinforced. If your puppy or dog responds to a command, give him a pat. Even if you had to repeat the commands few times before your puppy responds you should still provide positive reinforcement immediately after he responds. This is especially true if you are in the beginning stages of house breaking your puppy.
Keep a Firm Tone
When you give your dog or puppy a command ensure that you are using a firm and demanding tone. Your puppy or dog can pick up on indecisiveness and will be less likely to follow your command. Remember there is a difference between firm and mean.
Slow Progression
Effectively training your dog with basic dog commands becomes much easier and more manageable if you break down each command into smaller steps before slowly progressing to mastery. If you'd like to teach your dog to sit, begin by saying the command and simultaneously helping your dog into the sitting position. Make him maintain the position for five seconds. Keep practicing this until your dog learns to sit without help. Then begin to practice sitting by increasing the amount of time and distance between you and your puppy or dog. Once your puppy has mastered obeying the sit command begin distractions like a bouncing ball, during the training process.
Keep Training Fun
Just like children your puppy or dog can become bored and uncooperative. To avoid this dilemma incorporate games and breaks in your dog training routine.

Under What Circumstances Expert Assistance Should Be Considered?

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your dog or puppy will still not obey your commands and may "refuse" to be house broken. Situations like this occur occasionally and are very frustrating. In that case it becomes appropriate to seek the services of an expert dog trainer. An expert dog trainer can show and help to train your dog. Situations that require an expert's assistance involve those with an overly aggressive dog and when you can't stop your dog from barking, difficulties in toilet training and problems with chewing or escaping. Seeking expert assistance can completely turn around your dog's behavior and make dog ownership an enjoyable experience once again. They can also provide you with dog training tips for your particular situation and puppy.
